My Dungeons and Dragons Explosion Challenge means I’ll be playing a series of extremely old, slightly old, and kind of old Dungeons and Dragons games through the month of August. Does this means I’ll be playing each one to completion? Hell no. This is what’s going to happen:
- I play the game until all of my characters are dead.
- I win the game.
- That’s it.
Those are the choices. I will allow myself saves, but I will not abandon the game until everyone is dead or I have won (barring resurrection spells if I can afford them).
I have a wide array of games to play, starting from 1st Edition D&D and I believe all the way to 4th Edition. As well there will be adjustments to my party as I go along. Some characters will come and go or slightly change their class or even race depending on the games, but I’m going to keep the composition of my party mostly the same if it’s allowed. This means you’ll see the same names popping up, but maybe not the same faces.
Here are the games (I chose games in which I can select my own party):
- Pools of Radiance
- Curse of the Azure Bonds
- Secret of the Silver Blades
- Pools of Darkness
- Gateway to the Savage Frontier
- Treasures of the Savage Frontier
- Champions of Krynn
- Death Knights of Krynn
- The Dark Queen of Krynn
- Eye of the Beholder
- Eye of the Beholder II
- Eye of the Beholder III
- Icewind Dale
- Icewind Dale 2
I’ll be updating my progress in diary style posts, letting you know what’s going on, when I achieve some marvelous success or suffer some shitty defeat. Without further ado, here is my party composition (subject to change for each game).
All current pictures are from Pools of Radiance.
Grim Challange: Human Male Fighter-type, Lawful Good, but grim AF. Inspired by my typo when inviting people to help me name my character (I spelled “challenge” wrong) and from my loyalty to all things grim, namely The Grim Tidings Podcast. (Hiking FTW).
Trogen Facehook: Human Female Fighter/Barbarian-type, Chaotic Neutral, heavy drinker of alcohol and/or blood. She also has the tendency to horde weapons, making her a veritable pincushion. Named from my best friend Jody on Facebook, a D&D veteran in his own right.
Clews Za Cleric: Human Male Cleric, Chaotic Good, nice guy who sometimes likes to bash people with his flail and mutter curses. Named after the first person who commented on one of my posts on Facebook, the ever-awesome Thomas Clews. Has a love/hate relationship with undead.
Mimi Mirrors: Gnome Female Fighter/Thief, Neutral Good (No Illusionist in early games, but she’ll be one later). This character will be mostly focused on shadows, mirrors, smoke, and other obscuring things. She’ll most likely evolve through the different games.
Yamagata: Half-Elf Male Cleric/Mage, True Neutral, traveler, wanderer, hiker, and named after the place where I will be spending some of my time during my August holiday, Yamagata, Japan. Yamagata will likely change to a druid and/or bard in later games if possible.
Goatscream: Human Male Mage (Specialist later), Changes Alignment as needed. A weird shirtless wizard not known for his manners and or capability of doing much of anything other than causing mayhem and chaos, Goatscream will scream his way maniacally through the series of games, collecting weird shit and screeching in the middle of the night.
